I was checking out the Steve Lukather website...apparently Toto99 (the rebirth of Toto) is on tour...apparently original Toto bassist, Mike Porcaro is recovering from some sort of illness, and they've seconded Lee Sklar to fill in...how cool is that? in addition, the Toto99 website lists the drummer of the band as Simon Phillips (replacing, of course, the late legend, Jeff Porcaro). Simon Phillips is a kick-butt drummer who's done a lot of work with Pete Townshend in the past (e.g. "You better, you bet", and "Slit Skirts" feature Simon). We don't get access to any of this good stuff over here
actually, Simon Phillips played with Pete Townshend on Pete's solo stuff, and in 1989 went on tour with the Who.
Sklar is a killer, kick ass. player. Great time, groove. I would put he up there with Pino Palladino. For his ability to play multi-styles of music. Jamer Taylor Billy Cobham Crosby & Nash Jackson Brown Lyle Lovert Phil Collins Barefoot Servant Just a few live acts I seen Sklar play with.
Duh! Simon Phillips has been a permanent member of Toto since 1992 when the great Jeff Porcaro died. That means he's been in Toto almost as long as Jeff. But yeah, Lee Sklar is way cool. He's definitely the most characteristically looking bass player
I have tickets to see them on June 7th, 3rd row seats for 45.00, what a deal in these days of over priced concerts.....can't wait
I heard and interview Lee did after getting the Toto gig. I thought it was funny he was saying he was listening to the tunes to figure them out. They offered him charts, but refused. Said charts are like heroin for him, you give him one you'll never get it back. Also of interest it was said he had cleared was clearing his schedule for a year. So it seems he thinks this gig will last for awhile.
yeah toto is a great band, i've seen them 3 times already. apparently sklar got the call 5 days before the tour started.
That was obviously a troll post, but what the heck... Lee Sklar is overrated? Or Toto is overrated? I have a hard time with either assertion. Toto, if anything, is underrated. I wonder what your basis would be to say that Lee Sklar is overrated?
