Do I like to play a friend's righty bass? Sure! Is it frustrating? No, not really. I know that it is strung up "wrong" and I don't let that bother me. Actually, you will learn a few walks and riffs that you will be able to do on a righty bass. So you can fool around with it, but you cannot play a four hour set with it.

How do I choose which one to buy? I try out every lefty bass that I see. Before long, you will be able to pick up a righty bass and tell if you like that neck or that spacing, etc., without having to try out a lefty in that specific model. You can easily tell if you like that tone or not - no problem there.
Once you start playing in public, you will find some new left-handed friends who play bass and you can check out there equipment.

Also, you come to some bass forums - TalkBass, HCBF, ebassist - and ask questions. There are quite a few good guys out there who will answer.
