Does anybody have any tips or techniques for improving hand speed? I really want to be able to make smoke come out of the strings, but I can't seem to make that happen. Thanks!

I would suggest doing a search in the forums as this question has been asked several times. Also, TECHNIQUE is a more likely forum to get more answers.

My advice, is that slow = fast. You can't do it fast until you can do it slow. Metronomes (IMO) are great here because you can practice something at a given tempo, until you're very comfortable with it, and then increase the tempo, say 10bpm, until you're comfortable there. Then so on, and so on. Start slow. Speed doesn't come overnight. Jaco admits that it took him something like 6 years to be able to play Donna Lee.

Start slow, build up speed little by little. And, good luck.
