Im having to use my thumb to help out my fretting fingers (put pressure on the back of the neck with it), is there a way to make eliminating that easier?

Why would you want to eliminate that? That's how you're supposed to do it. Maybe not with a death grip, but the thumb should be behind the neck to support the other 4 fingers.

    Death grip = bad,
but using your thumb to help steady the neck while fingers fret stuff is the way it should go.

Just try not to push to hard with your thumb and itll be fine.

Thumb should only be on your neck so you know where your hand is.

What you do is squeeze the strings GENTLY until they touch the frets, then make your hand go limp so the pressure from your hand trying to drop holds up the string.

Take your thumb off the neck. If you can't fret the strings without your thumb (not play well, just fret), then your fretting mechanics are wrong.
