Since my (lefty-flipped) Steinberger XL-UF came into my life, I've barely played my fretted mid-80s MIJ Jazz. I'm getting close to thinking I might want to go all fretless, all the time.

The only problem with this is that I have no backup axe for gigs. I don't practice on the fretted Jazz enough to be comfortable with it anymore, so it's not going to fill that role very well.

Alternative 1: buy a cheap new fretless. Problem: I don't think I can find something like a Squier fretless in a left-handed model (somebody correct me if I'm wrong).

Alternative 2: de-fret and epoxy the Jazz neck. Problem: I don't like lines and I'm still a little dependent on the side dots being at the fret positions (not in between, as they'd be on a lined or converted neck).

Alternative 3: buy a lefty unlined fretless neck from Warmoth. I like this because I can always switch the Jazz back to fretted if that becomes necessary (I don't think it will, though).

Any thoughts? Anybody have experience with Warmoth necks? Their "neck builder" web app. seems quite cool.

  2. alternative 3: I have yet to be disappointed by a Warmoth neck. I actually have one for sale because I need money, not because the neck is not beautiful and rock-solid

Cool. That's good to know (too bad that neck is righty, or I'd snap it up.)

Beautiful! Did you consider a Carvin neck at all?
