I’ve done a little research on this topic, but I still feel like I could use more context, so here we are. I’m currently in the market to flip my Stingray for an American P-bass. Originally, I figured I’d just hunt down a used American Pro, since I’ve played many in store and already know they’re solid instruments. I like almost every thing about the pro except the taller frets. I can live with tall, but definitely prefer medium jumbo. However, the neck profile on the Pro is amazing. **THAT SAID, I’m seeing a lot of 1996 50th anniversary basses pop up online for great prices and in much cooler finishes than the Pros. Soooo... what’s the general consensus on 96 MIA p-Basses? Is QC generally good? What’s the finish on the necks like? I decided long ago that I absolutely despise gloss finishes on the neck. It looks like the Basses from this era have a matte finish on the headstock, which I like... makes it look less like a toy. Is it safe to assume the whole neck is covered in some kind of satin? Ultimately, the question is this: am I going to be blown away by the 96 Basses, or is it worth it to settle for the higher price tag, taller frets, and finish options of the Pro? IE is it an overall superior instrument?
