I've had some inquiries about my bass project and since I made some recent progress I thought it would be cool to share. I had the fingerboard come unglued and have solved that problem. I also finished sanding and staining it and have applied the first coat of clear.

I'm really excited about this project at the moment since it's going to be a fretless five and I've been GASing for a fretless fiver lately.

The top is myrtlewood. I think it was $40.00 on Ebay from sallyjacobs. They seem to consistently have myrtle and a variety of nice looking woods.

The finishing is a sort of between thing. I didn't want to have color variations around my routings, so I applied the dye before cutting the face. I put on one coat of clear so the dyed wood can be handled and worked on without getting dirty. Next step is to rout and finish shaping the back of the body, then complete the finish.

I've bought myrtle from sally. It's pretty nice, but when you bid make sure you take into account shipping. I think I paid like $15 + $11 in shipping or something like that. I hate it when shipping is as much as the item.

That piece of wood in combination with that stain looks almost like (gasp, do I dare say it?) ... SCALES! ;) Very, very cool. There have been a few attempts at a bass bass that I have seen but this one really looks the part. Neat!
  7. I really really like the look as is. Seriously, it has a quasi-Mouradian vibe to it. And that wood is really gorgeous.

    Good stuff so far man!

Definately gets an eye! I have a beautiful piece of black lip mother of pearl for it and have planned on using that or abalone since the first sketch.

Whew! That should look nice. I was worried there for a short second that you might put one of those 2-inch goggle-like doll eyes on it! ;) Just kidding ...

    Behold, there is an eye!

Kind of blurry I guess, but I'll take some nice shots at the next stage.

The whole project is pretty well laid out over on projectgu*tar.com if you're interested. Thread title is goin' fishin'

    Too cool. Looks great!
  14. Very cool! :D
  15. I was going to suggest putting a knob where the eye would be. An actual big fish eye will be even better!

    Your twisted man.......Great work!!

    Then consider me warped! :D

I forgot to ask earlier: Does the head look like a tail? :eyebrow:

And the most important question: How does she sound?

WOW!!! That this looks great, well worth the effort. What kind of bridge is that? did you make it on your own (the bridge that is)?
