Light gauge flats choice: good slap tone (besides D'addario Chromes)

Discussion in 'Strings [BG]' started by ValeriusCrow, Apr 24, 2017.

  1. Hi, guys, I've tried different flats but can't find "perfect" ones: I liked slap tone of Dunlop Flatwounds but they tension is bit too high for me, Chromes (45-100) that I use most of the time are lacking "true" flats character of sound. Thomastik didn't work for me (too dark sound), GHS Precisions 45-105 are too stiff (live slap sound also wasn't satisfying in any way).

    Any ideas?

  2. Sorry, but there is no such thing as "perfect flats for slap".

The Chromes in a lighter set might be better - something like 40-55-75-100.

Or, try the GHS Pressurewounds ML7200 (44-58-80-102).

EB Slinky Cobalt Flats are nice & bright. There's a recent thread that's very similar. Chromes & EB Cobalts seem to be the brightest Flats around.

If you want to slap on flats try super-light gauge (40-95) Chromes or EB Cobalt flats.

40-95 EB Cobalts without a doupt. Great strings.

This... if you are looking for flats for slapping, you are probably looking for that particular old school slap tone from the 70's no? These are the strings.

laBella low tension flats. Awesome strings just the right amount of tension. Nice balance and thump. Agree 100% with armybass.
