I just got like an 88 jazz/japan (i believe thats the year) for free. Its been sitting at a church in the case for 11 years untouched, and its aged quite nicely. Plays better than any american jazz ive ever played and sounds just awesome. Is that typical of the japan basses? it seems to be built waaaaaayyy better than the americans.

I have owned '86 and '87 Japanese Fender Jazz Bass Specials and loved them. IMHO better than American Fender's.

I don't know if they are better or not, because I have played some fantastic American Fenders. The Japanese Fenders are awesome though. I would say your experience is pretty typical.

I can't say the best MIJ I've played is better than the best MIA I've played, but if I had to take a random MIJ or MIA - I go with an MIJ.
