I am looking at purchasing a powered EV sub/ 18 in speaker to run vocals/guitar/bass through. Has anyone had experience using one live?

You won't need it for vocals.. And only for the lower bass and guitar registers.
Should we assume you have other speakers to compliment the sub?
If so, feed signal into sub and then into tops. Make sure the sub is crossed over so only non-sub frequencies go to the tops.. or if sending a full range signal to the tops, make sure you have a high pass filter set to remove the sub frequencies.. Or you'll have both speakers trying to reproduce the same audio. That will not sound good.

Other than that, adding a sub can be very beneficial!

Thanks. Good info. The good part about the EV systems is that when you set up the mains it has a sub selection on it that automatically sets frequencies.

Yes, it does, but you should still double check.
We used ours so infrequently that we sold it..so I forget the exact settings.
Most of our gigs have house provided PA… We now rent if PA is needed.
