Load an old cab with a new fat speaker, or add an audere preamp??

I have an old 15"inch dietz cab that's solid as a rock loaded with some crappy replacement.
I'm currently running a 2003 mij Geddy lee jbass through a markbass 12inch combo>12" ny traveler cab.
My concern is that I want a much fatter 'vintage' jbass/pbass tone with more low end.
So should I: 1) reload the old dietz 15" cab with something fat like a Mesa and run that with the mark bass combo (any suggestions here on loading that dietz would be great!!)
    2) and austere pre amp to fatten up the tone/options on my bass
    3) do both???

A preamp is not going to move you towards a vintage tone. I would go try out some different amps. I am a vintage sounding guy and have never had much luck with the Mark Bass sound. FYI, My Jazz with Chromes is about as vintage as you can get, no matter what it is plugged into.

  5. In my mind you should first find out exactly what you have before you start mucking with it. Take the back off the cabinet, or the jack plate if it’s removable, and read whats on the back of the driver.

If it's JBL, sell it and fund a newer, lighter, more powerful cab.
