Longer String Length, Better Sustain?

I've been playing upright for 10 years (in church I've been using an NSDesign electric upright). But today, at the insistance of our music director, I played a bass guitar. I was surprised by the lack of sustain with the 34-inch 4-string (I was using a Pedulla Rapture) compared to the 41.5 inch strings I have with the NSDesign. Do you get better sustain with the 35+ inch 5-stringers that are out there? I also understand that there may be a sustain difference between bolt-in and neck through basses, but for the time being, I'm interested in the impact the string length would have on sustain.

    Thank!
