Looking at getting my first REAL amp

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by midnight, Jan 2, 2001.

  1. Hi all,

Newbie here. I've been playing bass for 5+ years and have always practiced through my Fender BXR-25 (25W 10"). Not horrible for a small room, but couldn't even run it as a monitor in a typical jam. I do mainly Church stuff, and have used their equipment. Most recently my church got an SWR Super Redhead. Sweet combo, but the amplifier blew and it's out for repair (Plus, too expensive for me.) I would like to get a combo that could be used for a decent backup. I've surfed for quite some time and have been sold on the SWR Workingman's 15, then the Gallien-Krueger 400RB 15", and now the Nemesis N-212P. Each one has such strong recommendation and I'm sure I would be happy with any of them. I started with the SWR from reading articles, then the GK caught my eye... especially the 2 10" version because of the easy expandibility of an extra cab. Now the Nemesis seems to be in front from recommendation and articles. I wish there was a Nemesis dealer within driving distance so I could compare the 112, 115, 210 and 212 to see differences. I am thinking of going with the 212 due to the extra speaker size (2 12") and power. Am I correct in reading that the 210 is wired at 8 ohm, but the 212 is 4 ohm? What concerns me is that I've heard from so many people that run the 112, 115 and 210 (and even a 410 person out there!) but no one seems to have a 212 on here. If there is, please post.

Bottom line: all three combos are within $20-30 of eachother (SWR: 629.95, NC-212P: 649.95, GK: 649.95) so price is not an issue. I am pretty sure I'm going to go with the Nemesis, but will be checking back to see if anyone has strong reasons for switching.

Thanks, and you can read a bit about me and my bass at http://www.soggycat.com/music.htm

Go look in the july 1999 issue of Bass Player at http://www.bassplayer.com, they made a combo amp shootout you should give it a look.

They gave the highest points to the SWR Workingman's and also the Nemesis. I personnally wouldn't go with GK.

Also, go to this page for more product reviews: http://eksl-www.cs.umass.edu/~schmill/reviews/reviews.html

    Good Luck...

P.S. If you mean 212 as in 2 12" speakers, they're ussually used for guitar. The most common bass speaker sizes are 10", 12", 15" and even 18". But I saw a Peavey 412 Bass cab in a store a month ago.
