    I'm looking for a bass with a 50s/rockabilly vibe.
I'm not getting into an upright, and I've already got my nice basses. I just want a sub $1k bass that looks retro for a specific couple of gigs coming up. (Maybe more than a couple gigs, but strictly knock-around stuff.)

Any recommendations? I've looked at the Jack Casady, and if I could find a Reverend nearby, I'd probably check one out...

    Whaddaya think?

I believe Wheezer proved that there actually IS an objective bass to be played while in the presence of the Fonz.

What about a Longhorn? I think jerry jones makes some decent ones.

I think any "traditional" looking bass would be fine. A P would be great, but a J would be ok to. The audience won't know.

If it looks old and beat up in a "well used" kinda way, even better.

Washburn makes a really retro looking 4 and 5 string. Semi-hollow body. I've never played one but as far as looks go...it's pretty old-school looking.
  10. Go for the Warwick Fortress Flashback that's for sale in the TB classifieds...gret retro look with the shiny lipstick pickups and the perloid pickguard, plus great tone. (It's not mine, I don't even know the dude selling it, but I have the 5 string version and it's a great bass).

How about an old Gibson Hollowbody? An EB-something or other.

Yes, you can snag one for 4-500 dollars.

For even an earlier period vibe you can get the 51 Reissue P for not much more.

Whichever one it is, you must put the covers on it!

I think I remember seeing a Happy Days episode in which the bassist of Richie's band was playing a Jazz Bass. I noted the anachronism at the time.
