Looks like I'll be playing lots of "Stranglehold" ( ) so I could use a flanger. I'm poor like most of America these days, so I need something that'll fit in a tight budget.

EDIT: So it seems I may actually be craving a cheapo phaser. Suggestions on both would be awesome.

So, pretend you'll be eating Ramen for the forseeable future, but you still need this pedal. What do you get?

Some background on my pedalboard to date:
Jag bass (better than any pedal with all its options)
    Russian Muff
    wah
    compressor
    reverb
    chorus

I look at the classifieds here and on Ebay for older used models. Price is far more important than nrand if it's just for a handful of bars.

  3. I always recommend getting an old DOD FX72. I've bought one twice, and each time got it for around 40 bucks. Also, I see used Boss BF-2s and BF-3s go for around 50 on eBay all the time

Any of those can do stranglehold

  4. The FX-72 is very nice, as is the FX-75(B or C version). I had a Boss High-Band Flanger; didn't like it. it wasn't bad, just not for me.

FWIW I think the song was recorded with an MXR Phase 100. You should be able to get close with most flangers or phasers.

Yeah, I believe Stranglehold was a phaser, not flanger.

Interesting... Guess I didn't do my homework. Could someone post an example of a song that definitely uses a flanger on bass?

the DOD FX75s look tempting, I see them for about $30 on musicgoround.com.

Get a Fender Starcaster Flanger at target for about 35 bucks. I bought the chorus pedal and it sounds really good.

They seem to be going for about 50, and I'd rather get something used than anything Starcaster-related. But interesting suggestion; these pedals are so hideous they're almost cool.

    I like turtles.
Get a Boss BF-2 (I shouldn't think you'll find many new ones, so it will be used). I got mine for £30, which is about $45-50 I think.

My local music store has one for $150 new, which I thought was absurd. Dunno what I can find used, but this is now the front runner since I played with it.

Probably the best straight-ahead advice you can ever give about a cheap pedal. I love my plastic-cased Dano reverb, its so warm! Time to dig up some reviews....

    Flanger: DOD FX70 or FX72, Boss BF-2
Phaser: MXR Phase 90, EHX Small/Micro Stone

  15. I actually have a Danelectro flanger. It works great and was very cheap. It sounds better on guitar though.

FLANGE: No two ways about it, the EH Electric Mistress. It's the only flanger I've ever used that was not "flangey" and "sweepy" sounding, but much more atmospheric. I've used piles of flangers, it always comes down to the Mistress.

Find a bud that is fairly good with a soldering pen and have it converted to true bypass for the price of a switch ($6 perhaps?). Add another $1 and get an indicator LED put in.

PHASE: Check the 'bay for Phase 90 clones... the Ph90 was used on a lot of 70's recordings (For The Love Of Money) and there are 25 tons of ph90 clones kicking around out there today that are built MUCH better than any old ph90.

Even a used Ph90 would do you well.

    Hope I helped :)
