I'm looking for a sonata to start working on for grad auditions next year. I've played the Koussevitsky, parts of the Bach suites, Gliere short pieces and others, so that might give you an idea of what level I'm at. I'm starting the Bottesini Concerto in F# minor, and Elegy in D maj, but some master's programs want to hear a major romantic sonata along with the concerto, Bach suite, and excerpts. Does anyone have any suggestions for a major romantic sonata? I've been looking at the Hertl Sonata, but I'm not sure if everyone would consider it romantic. By the way, Duncan McTier has a great recording of this piece on his album "Sonata".
    Thanks in advance,

  2. Major romantic sonata ? Misek No.2 or Schubert Arpeggione.
Unless you want to play some transcription of a Beethoven Sonata.
The horn sonata Op.17 is excellent, early romantic, and not very difficult.

Misek No.1 is less interesting but easier than No.2.

Some folks think it's corny, but if you're looking for something unabashedly romantic, try Rachmaninoff's Vocalise.
