Howdee... I'm currently using a 3" wide flannel-coated strap for my various basses, ranging from 9 to 11 pounds. I would like something wider, but no store seems to carry anything wider than 3", and I can't even find anything in Musicians Friend and related magazines (of course, they don't always go into these details, and when they do they can be cryptic). Anyone got any experience with 4-5" straps and leads on where I can lay my mits of one? Thanks, Richard
midnight, I've never seen a strap wider than 3". But if you get a good padded strap(Levy's), it will help a lot. I have a leather Levy's padded 3" strap, and it helps a lot with my heaviest basses, my Jazz and my Soundgear. I also have a leather 2" Levy's padded strap, and it is great for my lighter basses, Zon, Cirrus and Pedulla.
I was looking for the same, so much so, that twice I wrote to Jason Newsted asking him where he got, or had made, those great heavily padded wide leather straps he used in the last few years ( never got that answer, oh well.) I did find a Planet Waves wide padded Cordura strap. Does a nice job, and is does not slip much. I think it was about $27.00 U.S.
I had a leather shop guy in my hometown make me one,I tried the padded ones which are very comfortable but they soak up sweat like crazy and after a break I could not stand putting that cold yucky thing back on,I could not find a wide and thick strap most are very thin and will not distribute the weight evenly, you should be able to find a good leather shop to make you one and they can do original designs too like your name or something self expressive.
I have one of Ken Smith's fine leather straps, the shoulder pad of which is well-lined with soft wool and is 3"+. It cost $$$, but it makes my 10 pound RBV playable when standing up.
Levy's makes really nice padded straps, mine is 3" I think. God damn man you must have some wide ass shoulders if you need anything more then 3". You might wanna conseder playing Football if you don't play already!
Elderly carries (or will order) the 4" cloth and the 3 1/2" padded leather Levy straps. http://www.elderly.com/accessories/STRP.htm That being said, nothing I've found is as comfortable a the 3 1/2 wide sheep wool padded I've been using for 20 years. The old BB1200 series Yamaha is a heavy beotch. I do some leather work and if I built my own I would make it somewhat L shaped. The edge of the straight strap rides up into my neck when I position the bass towards the right side ofmy body. Measure from the horn strap button to the top of your shoulder to find the center of the L angle.
