Hello. I am thinking about getting a custom made 4 string fretless bass. For this bass I want to go for a single passive pickup in the music man/sweet spot position. I does not have to be a music man type pickup, but still a pickup that can capture the lyrical fretless sound well.

The jury is still out on wood type too if you have any thoughts there. It is gonna be painted, so I dont need any fancy tops, though lightweight is nice.

What do you recommend and why?

    Thanks

I used a Bart MMC for a homemade fretted bass and it sounds beautiful. Definately will be a winner on fretless. They just seem to be a very expressive pup.

Bartonlini makes several versions of the MM style:

MMC - bright, smooth humbucker - strong lows and low mids

MMK - brighter humbucker - treble enhanced version of the MMC

MMX - brightest, but not harsh, humbucker - more treble and bass than the MMK

MME - bright, smooth triple coil design

MMEX - brightest, treble enhanced version of the MME

Here is a sound bite of mine before I added onboard electronics. I think I had a slight "smileyface" eq setting on the preamp:
