I'm hoping for some input or consultation before having one built. by some people who have had experience with different woods and such.

I just am unsure on where to start.

I'm going for a modern punchy, compressed, rear pickup sort of sound. I'm a fan of clarity and growl, but not highs or bright tones. I was playing a Geddy Lee bass and got really close with just the rear pickup on and the tone knob almost totally bassed out while playing over the rear pickup.

like if this had less highs to it:
Allan Holdsworth Low Levels High Stakes - YouTube
or better yet if this had frets.
Trilok Gurtu - Big Brother - YouTube

    this is what i'm thinking:
    Bolt on for the punchiness
Ash tone block and African Mohogany wings
    Wenge/maple neck
    Pau Ferro Fingerboard
    Koa Top
    Bartolini pickups
    Mike pope pre.

    any other advice?
