    Hello everyone at Talk Bass,

I am a new bassist and I am want fellow bassists opinions on what I should try learning first in my baby steps life as a bassist. I prefer things after the 90's but anything will do.

Best thing is to listen carefully to music you like and try to figure it out by ear. You'll be able to tell pretty quickly if it's too complicated for you. For 90s and after, Weezer, Barenaked Ladies, and OK Go come to mind for me, also Oasis. But that's my taste. U2 is also always good to learn with: Adam Clayton generally plays pretty simple bass lines which are still oddly satisfying to listen to.

Audioslave, Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer. One of the first songs I learned was Prison Sex by Tool, which is easy as far as Tool goes and a fun song to play.

There are a lot of songs and bands out there, you just have to pick your favourite sounding. learning easy songs isnt always the best approach. It's good to learn a couple easy songs at first to learn and grasp the concept, but you should gradually switch to more and more challenging songs to test your mettle.

  9. My first song was Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd.

  11. listen to motown - you'll get your chops up AND learn alot about arpeggios and chords etc. I knew a lot about theory before I touched a bass, but it was still helpful to me. every so often when I have a sec, I go to youtube and find a motown video I don't know and figure it out. . .
