The band I'm in uses the proceeds from the tip jar to pay most of the common expenses--travel, promotion, etc.

We have a couple of projects comming up that are going to require some extra cash. I would be interested in knowing how others promote tipping without it coming off like you're browbeating the audience.

We always encourage tipping of the bartenders/wait staff--I'm looking for suggestions of how we could do the same for ourselves--humorous banter/one-liners from the bandstand, funny signs on the tip jar, etc.

Make sure you get one of those humongous pickle jars if you can, and paint it florescent orange!

This one's a gallon--that ought to be sufficient.

Send a babe around to solicit tips. Give her a cut. It works for us.

  11. no really, have a 50\50 raffle...your are not asking(begging) for cash when it's a contest\drawing when someone has a chance to win money. It's kinda like playing the lottery, and more people are more inclined to buy a ticket. sell them for a dollar each or 3 for $2 or an arms lenght for $5..have the drawing at the beginning of your third set, then you split the pot with the winner..and the crowd stays all night...one band I play in does this all the time and it really helps our take at the end of the night..and it's not panhandling.;)

You could put a couple of quarters in phil the tip jar and use him as a rhythm instrument like maracas. Thus he will become phil the musical tip jar and he will get alot more notice as well.

No good. We already have 2 Phils in our band.

Although... Phil playing Phil the Tipjar...

No. Way to confusing. Unless you don't have any Phils in your band, in which case the idea sounds pretty good.
  14. Tips? Why don't you sell merch like everyone else?
