Currently I’ve got a reverend thundergun loaded with two Nordstrand big blade man pickups. However the tone isn’t exactly what I’m looking for. I’m going after something that’s grindy yet muscular. I’m looking at Nordstrand mm4.2 pickups or the Ulyate tic tac pickups. Anybody have any experience with either?
There’s not a bigger Nordstrand fan than me anywhere. Having said that, you mentioned wanting grind and muscle. An MM pup with ceramic magnets would certainly provide that, based on my experience with SR5s of the time period when they used ceramic pups. You probably can’t get a ceramic pup directly from Music Man (or most other parts not in replacement situations I. E. You return the bad pup before they’ll sell you a replacement). Seymour Duncan is the only aftermarket MM-style pup available in a ceramic model. That’s one idea. Past that, I have no experience with any aftermarket MM pups. I will say that after enjoying 3 different SR5s with ceramic pups (available in SR5s from 1993 to 2008, when they switched to Alnicos), I got a 2011 and I’ve been able to make it pretty grindy with a little experimenting. My first choice of aftermarket MM pup would be the Nord you mentioned.
The nords are probably what I’m going to end up going with. All the sound clips I’ve heard have sounded good. Maybe not quite as grindy as I’d like initially but they seem to have plenty of pop and clarity. Grind I can get from other places.
