    i play funk and rock.
would flat wound strings sound ok?
it want to save the frets and my fingers!
i was just wondering if flatwounds sound ok to slap with.
    well do they?
and if not what do you prefer?

  3. Drop by a music store and try a bass with flatwounds if you can. Although you might like the sound of flats for slap there doesn't seem to be a lot of people using 'em. Perhaps this is an indication of the sound.

Do flats cause less fret wear? I'm not sure about that.

the only flats on a bass that i can find is on a fretless. that is the reason they are on fretless is because less wear on the wood. so it is the same for the frets.
today tho they are using roundwound on fretless

  5. Metal on metal and metal on wood will wear much differently.

Especially in this case since the contact of a string to a fret and to a fretless fingerboard are vastly different.

But this is a little outside the current discussion.
