Anyone know of a set of single coil jazz pickups that sound good in active and passive mode? I don't want bartolinis. All the sets I've had have been too dark sounding.

What kind of sound are you looking for? What active/passive electronics are you using? What bass?

I'm building a jazz style bass. I want a full even response across the freq spectrum.

If you're building a 4 you may want to check out Bass Player magazine's J pickup shootout. That would be a good starting place. There are a bunch of choices.

I've had several basses with passive Bartolini J's and a preamp that sounded full (hard to get Barts to sound thin without tweaking) but hardly dark.
