Looking for Quality Comp & Overdrive

  1. Hey everyone,

Haven't posted in a very looong time, but glad to pop in every once in awhile.

Here is my situation - I'm having more and more intermittent power problems with my Boss ME-50B and looking to get something new. The only real thing that I use it for is for compression and a little of it's Bass Driver setting, so those are the two pedals that I am looking into.

My first thoughts are for a Aphex Punch Factory and a SansAmp Programmable Bass Driver DI. Anyone use either of these pedals or preferably use them together? I'm a huge fan of how the ME-50B puts the compression first in the signal chain, has any one run a compressed bass signal into the Bass Driver? Also, how much does the Bass Driver compress your sound/signal on it's own (it's supposed to sound like a overdriven tube amp so I'm assuming it squishes a bit)?

I'm running an OLP Music-Man copy 5 string with an SWR SM900 head and Yorkville 2x10 and 1x15 cabinets and I play in an all original modern rock band. We're looking to do some touring in the next year and backline venue amps will be provided,... also something for me to consider and that's why I thought my bass and 1 or 2 pedals would be easy to transport and a built in DI on the Bass Driver might be handy.

Any thoughts before I go out and put some money on things?

    Thanks,

    Benner

  2. both sound like great choices. for in depth reviews check the FX FAQ for OD/Fuzz/Distortion and check TB member Bongomania, his signature has a great compressor review page on it.

  3. If I recall correctly, Bongo liked the BBE Opto-Stomp a lot more than the Aphex, and they're in the same ballpark as far as price. You might also want to look into a rackmounted compressor. They will typically have a lot more controls to tweak to get "your" sound.

  4. I use the BBE Opto-Stomp and I love how it's so transparent. Gets the job done without being blatantly noticeable, which is how a good compressor should work in my opinion.

For my overdrive, I've used the Digitech Bad Monkey modified by Humphrey Audio, and currently have a Fulltone Bass-drive which blows the monkey out of the water IMHO. Now i'm looking for the mosfet version for the added versatility.
