I am planning on starting to learn to play the bass. Eventually I would like to play funk, like Parliament/Funkadelic, and James Brown type of stuff. Since you all seem pretty knowledgeable, I was wondering if you could recommend a bass to buy. I want to get something decent--not too expensive, but not crappy either, something around $300 (willing to go higher if needed). Any help you guys could offer would be appreciated. Thanks alot.

    Hi and welcome to Talkbass!

    Made in Mexico Fender Jazz

(This must be the first time I recommend a Fender - I'm getting mellow :D ).

  3. The standard reply to the under-$300-bass question. MIM Jazz's are a great starting point, easy to upgrade electronics later!

I agree with the other opinions. Good bass for the price. Don't think you would be dissapointed.

  5. Hi and welcome to Talkbass!

If you have a friend or know someone who is knowledgable about basses, have them go with you. You can find good deals in your price range and you can also find really poor ones. Someone who is familure with basses could be a big help...

At least try and buy from somewhere that will offer you a 30 day return.

    Good luck!!

I just wanted to thank you guys for your help. I went and looked at the MIM Fender Jazz. My friend that knows about basses said the one I was looking at was of really good quality, so I went ahead and bought it and am digging it so far. Thanks alot!
