This morning I went to the local farmers market and loaded up on tomatoes. Between me, my wife, and the kids we'll go through these in three days tops. My favorite is tomato sandwiches...toasted bread, mayo, salt and pepper, and a dash of bacon bits. Any other tomato fans?
Ya man I dig 'maters. My granddad spent his retired life growing tomatoes, selling quite a few to the local grocers. For me though you gotta switch the mayo to mustard (not a fan of mayo) otherwise a big +1. God Bless, Ray

Me likes! However I'm stuck with supermarket tomatoes until mine come in. My plants are growing above my 4 ft fence, but no red ones just yet. Shortly I'll have more than I can eat and will have to get creative with them.
I'm impatiently watching some beauties grow in my backyard. Not that I'm biased but here in Ontario we grow some damn fine maters!!!
Unfortunately I have a lot of trees in my yard and no where is a good spot to grow my own. The few times I've tried, well, they were small and took forever. I guess I'm just spoiled with the huge specimens (and reasonable prices) from the local farmers around here. I've had 4 tomato sandwiches already today.
I have no place to grow them, but I do love'em. I have to get to the farmer's market and get some good ones.
Yes, it's a UK thing. But you can buy it in the US if you search for it. Similar to Vegemite (yeast extract) but not quite the same. Very savoury, a love it or hate it thing (the ad campaign over here exploited that fact). It exists over here to use up what the brewers had left over when they'd finished using the yeast to make beer. It's none the worse for that, though. I've loved it since I was about three.
Well, just had sandwiches #5 and #6 for the day. Tried 1/2 of #6 with mustard, I must say it was *very* good. Thanks for the idea. I still prefer Mayo though, but that preference has many years of enjoying summertime tomato sandwiches fixed that way so I guess it isn't likely to change. Peace.

Well at least you tried it. I grew up in Texas and mustard is king there. Mayo is more the norm I know and it's definately more old school southern. I live in Georgia now with all of my Pop's family around. They're definately old school southern folks. Barbecue is Pork. Being a Texas boy barbecue is Beef for me. I'm definately the oddball when my family fixes mater samaches. By the way I've got a friend who swears by homemade biscuits with light mayo and tomato as well. I've never tried it but he is DEFINATELY old school southern and FAT so he probably knows his business when it comes to food. God Bless, Ray
Oh wow. It would be hard to find Barbecue around here that isn't pork. But even regionally it varies. I'm originally from the Tidewater area of Virginia, so barbecue there was lots of "Carolina style", which is the dry, pulled, vinegar based pork. Up here in Charlottesville that style is practically unheard of, instead it's traditional "Southern style" which is tomato/barbecue sauce drenched sliced pork. Hmm...never heard of bicuits like that, but sounds perfect to me. Funny how food varies across regions. We have friends from New York, and not long after moving here they called my wife and exclaimed that they just had lunch at a mutual friend's house and were shocked that they make ice tea "like we do". Turns out they thought we were some sort of strange sugar fanatics because we like our iced tea so sweet. Seems they didn't know that's just how ice tea is in the South.
Funny story behind the tea too. In Texas they don't sweeten tea. In a restaurant you'll get unsweet tea and sweeten it at the table (which never works, iced tea doesn't sweeten). You'll end up with a half an inch of undissolved sugar in the bottom of your glass and semi sweet tea My mom still lives in Texas. She came to visit and her favorite place to eat is Red Lobster. We went out to Red Lobster and she ordered "Tea". And you know as well as I do in the South when you order "Tea" you get "Sweet Tea" if you want it unsweet you order Unsweet tea. Well needless to say she's yapping away all the while loading this glass of tea down with Sweet N Low, all before tasting it. She took a sip and I know the stuff had to be like syrup, man you should've seen her face. She tells the waiter she'd put too much Sweet N Low in Could he bring another glass. He told her (in a teasing manner) "I ain't got time for dumb folks". I still laugh at that one God Bless, Ray
