i play bass guitar and i don't have a big budget but i want to try double bass. can you tell me a low price brand?
AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!! There is not a standard low end line of double basses. In the bass guitar spectrum, you have your low end of brand products from Ibanez, Squire, Epiphone, etc. Not here! What we do have is fully-carved, carved top, and plywood laminated basses in descending order of expense. In the plywood category, there are some names that tend to stand out, like Kay, American Standard and Englehardt. Still, with certain exceptions, you are still looking at about $1,300 minimum for a well setup, well maintained plywood. Now, I know you can probably walk into Marrs Music, and in their "band section" you might be able to pick up a bass for under $1,000. The question is, is it playable. How would you know? The answer is to first get a QUALITY, CLASSICALLY-TRAINED TEACHER. The bass is different from the bass guitar. That person will help you eventually select a bass that fits your requisites. Hopefully, you do not end up buying a low end bass that ends up in the corner collecting dust, while you are back to thumping the Ibanez. Good luck with your search.
ThatÂ’s it. I'm gonna call Ibanez and convince them to "standardize" the DB and mass-produce at the $300 level. Maybe a particleboard top with a plastic back or something? If that doesn't work I'll try Rogue.
