Any fans? I've been listening to Metallica's (with a few other artists) cover of Tuesday's Gone, and I fell in love with it. I just downloaded a few Lynyrd tracks, and I can definitely follow the music. What's the bass players name, by the way?
Leon Wilkinson is his name. He died about a year or so ago. It's so unforuanate that there's so much pathetic drama surrounding the band.
Which tracks are you talking about on "Vicious Cycle" Leon played on two tracks "The Way" and "Lucky Man" and all the rest of the bass tracks were recorded by Ean Evans, Up till this cd It was Larry Justrom (original Bassist) Then Greg T Walker (Blackfoot) and then Leon, Leon left and was replaced by Ed King, and then Leon returned and Ed slide over to guitar!
I played in a Skynyrd tribute band for a while - while some may laugh at it as "trailer trash rock", this band commanded anywhere from $2k-$4k a gig PLUS expenses and even did a stint in France.....go figure, they have a French following. And Leon's lines are more intricate than he was ever given credit for, especially in terms of dynamics. I first thought they were simplistic....unitil I had to comp them!!!
Ya, I've always thought most of the Skynyrd bass lines were cool. I just heard "I Know A Little" on the radio the other day, that's got a rockin bass line it....don't know who the bassist could have been.
I downloadeda live video of Free Bird, who played bass in that song? Some of the best bass lines I've seen in a long time...especially during the solos towards the end.
It is Leon Wilkeson, I have it on DVD, and he cover all of the fret board! But I think his best work is on....The Way off Vicious Cycle One of the last tunes recorded before his death! And for those of you that don't know Leon wrote "TravellinMan" my forum name it has a killer line as well! Take Care TravellinMan
Lynyrd ROCK!! I saw 'em live a few weeks ago, they sppported Deep Purple! What an evening! Awesome band, still rockin' after 30years...
Just saw the Jimmie Van Zant Band last nite, Jimmie is a cousin and resemble's Ronnie to a "T", and the bass player Rick that play's with these guys, was good frends with Leon and got to talk shop after the show! If this band comes near you go check em' out! To check out dates go to Pollstar.com and type in Jimmie Van Zant Band and it should come up! Take Care TravellinMan
He also had a distinct grove and style that is very hard to cop, Listen to I know a little, Man oh man he rips
Yeah, the bass work on Simple Man is great too. He is definitley an underrated player. But Lynyrd Skynyrd has gone through so many member changes it's hard to keep up. I've seen them 4 times and I think it was 4 different bands.
Check out LS New Cd "Vicious Cycle" It has a tribute to Leon Wilkeson on their with an awesome Bass Line called "MAD HATTER" Take Care TravellinMan
