It scares me sometimes that I react this way to wood, (shut up!!) but I took these shots tonight and was so elated I had to share. I was afraid the boards weren't long enough. They were. Its pretty much the wildest maccasar ebony Ive ever seen.. and it looks like its gonna make a delicious fretless. Wood porn for you pervs...

    Can we say spooge?

Macassar (MAC-uh-sar, mac-ASS-er?) is a beautiful wood. I almost got a Mac fb from Gallery, but the FB on my next bass will be a little too big. Great piece, Adrian; congrats!

When I'm looking through those "One-of-a-kind" boards at www.gilmerwood.com, it's way better than porn. I tried to show a friend some of that Camphor Burl (that stuff is amazing). She thought I was quite lame. Those who don't lust after wood don't know what they're missing.

    That's a nice top Adrian...

I'm planning my next batch of basses and one of them will definitely have a macasser ebony top...

I'll probably build 4 or 5 Plume basses.
.Two of them will have one of thos burl maple dyed tops (one blue dye and one cranberry de :D)
. One with a macasser ebony top
. One maybe with a buckeye top (seems like Larry as found some without holes to fill....)
    ....

    Peace, JP

Ahhh...this site consistently reminds me of how great my GF is. She loves looking at woods and really appreciates a nice piece. Plus she just bought herself a pedula rapture 5 string. I should just marry her.

That looks like it will be really cool Adrian, I think it looks a lot better there somewhat "laid out" so to speak with the fretboard wood than what I pictured. Now I have no doubt it will exude total class.

I think those cinnamon/camphor burls look like the guts of some weird creature. That's what I always think when I see them. Am I nuts? :D

no, you are not nuts- we were laughing at Careys about that - i was calling it " lung tissue burl"

*Yes*...that is exactly what it looks like...I knew "strange creature" wasn't right. I think "lung tissue" hits the nail on the head.

Recently Larry has sent me a picture of some cool and clean buckeye...so we'll see what happens. I' not sure about that yet!

    Never say never :D

  14. Beautiful stuff, but I definately have mixed feelings about the cinnamon burl, too. (Is that the same as camphor burl?)

Adrian......that is very nice wood. I love Mac Ebony, we have some nice samples here at our local wood supplier. Hard to find them wide enough though. I think next to Ziricote and Bocote, Mac Ebony is my favourite wood. Too bad it's so pricey. Here's a pic of my Bocote fretless in the works

Very nice woods Adrian! looks like your gonna have yourself another outrageously fine bass. We look forward to hearing about it as she comes together.

The Nordstrand tops aren't really the kind I like, but I think they are the same as Camphor. The scientific name for Camphor burl is Cinnamomum Camphor, so...

I like the ones at Gilmer more, though. They look like pillows (to me, anyway. We're playing the Cloud Game with burls!). I guess it's like buckeye burls: some look great, and some look like vomit. It's basically like a wart or cancer, so we shouldn't really expect it to be great looking in first place.

    Here's some Camphor:

And some that (now that you mention it) looks kind of like the aforementioned Lung Tissue Burl, but I still like it.
