I scored what looks like a mid 1980's Schecter J style bass yesterday. The pickups are labeled "Made in Germany", they have what looks to be a 1980's date code, beefy construction, 3 leads coming from the pickups, and large pole pieces.

I am curious as to the brand / maker of these pickups..

They weren't many pickup builders in Germany in the 80s.
    Schaller, probably.

  3. A very early MEC model, perhaps??

Unlikely. Most MEC pickups are sealed and they are Warwick exclusive.

Schaller pickups are rarely seen in the USA but Kramer used them for years.

I have an old Schecter guitar that has pickups marked like that.

I did a little more searching, and it looks like Schecter used these Schaller pickups in the mid 80's. I think I will try these in my 1986 MIJ 75 Reissue, along with the Badass II.. Thanks for all the good replies!

A few of the Schaller Pickups were actually re-branded Dimarzio's.

I expect it to sound quite good....

I have a Schaller split P pickup on my 95 G&L SB-1 (limited application while split P MFDs were being finished). The SB-1 with a Schaller P-PUP is one of my best sounding G&L basses. Excellent PIckup. I had heard the Schaller P in 95 was identical to a Dimarzio P. I't hotter than a Pbass PUP but tamer than a G&L MFD P-Pup. Anyway, you have a Jazz pickup, but just thought I would add the info.

They looked like DiMarzios. They made their own version of the Model P, J and G. They still do. They are pretty much direct copies though.

But they were made by Schaller. I was a Schaller dealer back in the late 70's/early 80's. I've used them on my basses and have taken them apart, and they aren't exactly the same.

They make copies of DiMarzio guitar pickups also.

Kramer used to use DiMarzios in their basses, and then I had a Duke with a Schaller Bassbucker, so I guess they switched at some point. The Bassbucker was a Model G clone.
