Major G.A.S For new Fender Jazz

  1. Has anyone tried out or bought this new 1970 Classic Series 2008 Fender Jazz bass? What would you rather have. A new one or one from 1970?

I would imagine the vintage would be at least 1k more for one in good shape.

Forget the eBay nostalgia, 70's Fenders do NOT do it for me. I like some of the features, but man, the QC just kills it for me. These new 70's RI ones look real nice though. I wouldn't mind having one.

Tuesday, haven't had a chance to really play it.

First off, it's very light, which is cool! Fit and finish is great, looks like the tuners are keepers. It also sounds pretty good, but I will be adding a Hipshot vintage bridge and will most likely change the pickups and controls. Currently, I have a '75 CIJ Jazz with Rothstien V/B/T controls and Nordstrand pickups. Also have a Reggie Hamilton body, AllParts Blocked neck, Nordstrand P/J pickups with an Audere, which is possibly me favorite bass to date. Looking for something different on this one, any suggestions for some Jazz pickups other than Nordies? I play blues and classic rock and like a good, full deep bass sound.

  6. ill take the new one over the CBS one any day of the week.

  7. +1 The CBS era Fenders are hit or miss. There are diamond instruments in the sea of roughs. You better take the time to try out anything you might purchase.

I bought a set of Seymour Duncan Antiquity II's off ebay at a good price after pondering a jazz pickup brand that would give me just what you describe. "blues and classic rock and like a good, full deep bass sound" The Antiquity II's are suppose to do just that without losing any of the old school jazz bass nuance. What I didn't want was one of those super hot over boosted brand/model pickups.
Unfortunately I can't report on my set because I have yet to find a Jazz I'm happy with to put them into. I had to return an ebay purchased Jazz that the pickups were intended for when the bass showed up with undisclosed issues. I'm licking my chops for a bass to put them into though because they are described to be just what we're after!
