Hey guys. I have a vintage THumb NT4 that currently has the two-band pre amp and EMG's in it and i have been tossing the idea around about wiring it up with a passive VVT control set up and possibly some Nordstrand or Bart PUPs.

Any thoughts or ideas woulod be greatl appreciated. THanks

    Bump?

  4. So I take it your thumb doesn't have the electronics where you could just simply pull out the volume pot to switch into passive mode?

Oh it does have the original electronics in it as far as i know. it is an '88 and i dunno if that was before they added the push/pull. i hadn't thought about getting a pre with a active/passive switch.

My ibanez TR-505 Expressionist had a 3-band with the active/passive switch but even in passive mode there was a compressed sound across the entire freq range. In active it had a pretty good sound for a cheaper pre but when i took them out and wired up VVT with new pots, it was like the bass stepped out from behind a curtain. the adjustability of the active pre was missed, but the pure passive tone that was now there blew me away. it seriously has the thickest warmest jazz tone of anything ive played. I have had a number of players tell me how great of a "jazz bass" tone that it has, an i have never been one to try and emulate the J bass tone. it is like it just comes so easily thought it.

i just tpough it might be interesting to see how the Wick would sound.

I say 'go for it'... you can always change it back for whatever reason. And I'd try putting in DiMarzio Model J's... probably get a real ballsy + full/open sound from that.

Nice 'Wick! I put Nordys and an Audere pre in my 'Vette and they sound really, really good... much better than the Warwick stock active pickups. Not sure how they'd compare to the EMG's though... I always heard the EMG's sounded great.

They do sound good. Quite good in my opinion but i have gotten into the mind set of niceer basses with passive electronics and am going to give it a try probably
