Mandolin Design

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous [BG]' started by SheepHerder7898, May 21, 2003.

  1. A friend and I are planning on building an mandolin with his father and are trying to come up with some designs based on current instruments. Any of you have any ideas? Guitar shapes? Bass shapes?

Here's some examples of what I'm talking about:

I think the F-style mandolins are very cool-looking. If I was going to get/build a mandolin (which I have considered), I'd get/make one that looked like a mandolin. F-style. But that's just me.

I have an A-style Mid-Missouri mandolin. It's a simple design, but it's got very good sound and playability.

  4. I've got a Gibson A-0, very handy and sounds nice, if a little plain-looking. The things I don't like about F-style mandolins is that they can be uncomfortable to play with sometimes.

Are you making an electric mandolin?

  5. A "B.C.Rich" Warlock mandolin would be quite... special. :meh:

  6. it might be electric, but this is our first so I will probably go with acoustic. However, I might do a solid body electric. This might be an odd question, but does anyone know if a headless mandolin has been done?

  9. Hmm, that sounds like a lotta work lol. Hope you have a mill, so you can proto a new bridge :D Plus then ya gotta find double ball mando strings ;) It can be done, prolly. Why not.

  11. I love mandolins. I love them.

Yay for The Battle of Evermore! ;)

  12. Rip off a Fender design and call it the Mandocaster.

This looks enough like a Tele to work.

This, and the F-style, are my favorite mandolin designs:
