Maple Fretboards and Budget Basses

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by Dr. Cheese, Jul 31, 2005.

  1. Why is it that budget basses almost always have rosewood fretboards? It would appear to me that a maple fretboard would be cheaper. Can makers, dealers, techs, enlighten me?

Maple requires a more expensive finishing. Maple would warp easily if the finishing isn't done professionally. That's my guess.

My Yamaha Attitude Plus has a maple neck and you can't get much cheaper than that.
  5. Thanks Utopia Imminent, that makes sense. I like rosewood and pau ferro or ebony fretboards, but maple really floats my boat.
