I wanted to aquire a Sire "Marcus Miller" U5 short-scale bass in Tobacco Sunburst finish. There being none available in the entire U.S. I opted for what I could get: the Mint Green finish. Upon arrival I found this color to be even more nauseating than the online stock photos. What to do? Repaint or strip and refinish? Hoping for some nice wood underneath I stripped and was rewarded with some nicely grained wood with some interesting figuring through one of the panels. Stained with Minwax Gunstock and four or five coats of tung oil I think it came out pretty nice, though if I were to do it over I'd probably go with Tru-Oil for a glossier sheen:

This was my first woodworking project with a guitar body as the subject and it was so much fun and turned out so well I'm thinking of doing one of those DIY kits; so if any of you guys have any suggestions about the best kits, please post them!! :)

Ya, I debated that and decided to keep it for the logo and the original color. Makes it kind of "unique", no?

Oh, sorry, you're right. Forum noob here. I'll see if I can find a mod online to move it. Thanks for the heads up.

That headstock would look better stripped. The body came out nice .

Love this, really love it. Leave the headstock, too.

If you can't save just the logo, keep the headstock

Ha ha!! I hear ya!! This particular "Mint Green" was a little too in my face for my advanced age. ;)

But I did want to keep the logo, so it doesn't come across as a 100% home-brew effort. Refinishing the headstock would have destroyed it.

I put some D'Adarrio light-weight flat-wounds on it and with that slim neck and polished frets it plays - and sounds - real nice!! Incredible for this price point how nice that neck is. They put some real detail effort into it.

  19. Not a finish scheme I would have thought of :)

You could make a new decal and include the model name "naked"

The body looks awesome! Nice job.
That headstock does not go with it though. I would try to match them, and as someone said, see if you can get some new stickers from Sire.

I've got a mint green U5 as well. What a great bass they are, especially considering the price.
