I'm looking for more Marcus miler recordings as a sideman. I have his solo stuff. stuff with Sanborn, Luther and Aretha Franklin. what other stuff should I check out?
Check out almost every GRP artist from the early 80's ie. Tom Scott's Apple Juice, Brecker Bros Strap-hanging . The late 70's stuff from Lonnie Liston Smith and Urszula Dudziak are also special, pre Sadowsky pre-amp days.
Also, check out the early Lenny White and Grover Washington albums. Marcus was still a teenager when he recorded Lenny White's "Streamline" album in 1978.
I agree 100% with Straphanging & Apple Juice. How about even earlier with Star People & We Want Miles...Miles' chromatic Funk era?
Highlife is incredible, thanks for posting, I haven't listened to it in a while. It's now on my list for this afternoon! Also give a listen to Miles Davis "Amandla". Marcus wrote and produced on that one too.
I know Amanda but am no fan of Marcus Millers writing in the Miles context, so that one is not really a favourite of mine.
I just looked at the liners for City Kids (one of my favourite Spyro Gyra albums)...Marcus plays on 3 of the 8 tracks. Kim Stone plays the title track (& nails it). Will Lee plays 2 of the tracks. Eddie Gomez plays 2...one of which is "Conversations"...a great piece, IMO.
The nightfly as an album is one of my favourites. MM is on a couple tracks. As are some other very worth while players.
Listening to "Children Of The Night" right now. I was no fan of High Life when I bought it...so, it's been awhile for me, too. Marcus's bass is very out front & fat. Marcus Miller is also the album's producer. ...and most of the drumming on High Life is William Calhoun (Living Colour).
