    This made me smile:

while recording one of her solo albums in the 90s, Mariah started messing around with ideas for grungey rock songs. She and her band recorded the rock album during the studio sessions with Mariah writing snd producing, and a friend of Mariah’s singing lead vox (and MC herself on uncredited backup vox).

It was released in 1995 as Chick - Someone’s Ugly Daughter

i wonder if there are other examples of this out there?

She could have toured with Chris Gaines.

Yeah, sorry. They're both interesting, though. I do like to see what else somebody with a particular style has going on that we wouldn't expect.

That was the decade when Nirvana arrived. I bet there are a few artists who felt they should cover their bottoms by embracing the 'New way.'

Cheers all, I was really talking about popular artists doing secret projects. Probably should have been more clear :D

Still, nice to see the grunge bandwagon jumping in action!

Oh and that Kiss song is my favourite of theirs TBH...

I had never heard of this before, so I checked it out. It sounds like a committee of executives impersonating Veruca Salt.

Then the Prince “Madhouse 8” albums; did that guy’s brain ever take a break?

There was also “The Family”, which I believe is mostly him...

I don’t know if this fits the criteria, but a Who B-side(alternately credited to the Who Orchestra)was actually the Graham Bond Organization(Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker in the rhythm section)...

Well, that was his first substantial hit, a typical slice of pop R&B/soul for 1964; not long after that the Ramsey Lewis Trio had a groove/jazz hit instrumental version, but it wasn’t that radical a departure as they were all taking from the same musical roots.

It was more a comment on the mercurial changeability of artists, to a new environment.

There is some fantastic bass playing on this album! A quick search tells me that Prince and Eric Leeds were the only musicians. Prince's bass playing always a treat.

If you’re referring to what he was doing on “Drift Away”, seven years later, Soul music, or however you want to describe it, changed dramatically for everyone. Granted, ‘DA’ was recorded in Nashville with country guys, but I couldn’t call it that, it had more of a slight Memphis flavor.

"I'm in with the in crowd
I go where the in crowd goes
I'm in with the in crowd
And I know what the in crowd knows..."

I was using the lyrics as a metaphor for 'managed' artists. It wasn't a reference to Dobie himself.
