Any organization, decluttering, storage, furniture, and/or layout tips out there you all may have found to keep the home studio neat and tidy?

While still having a PC-based setup that's ready to record without much ado?

This is not my studio, but where my home studio/office appears to be heading:

How can I get things under control a la Marie Kondo? Help me Talkbass!

My primary goal is to have a setup that I can quickly start recording from when the inspiration strikes. I hate having cables, pedals, and gear all over the floor, but also don't love taking 30 minutes to get everything out of a closet or storage room just to get to the point where I'm able to record. Often 30 minutes is all the time I might have at any given moment.

    Thank you, TB!

  2. The short answer: find a specific place for every piece of gear, and invest a couple hundred to a couple thousand dollars in cables and patch bays. Now you can quickly route any output to any input by just using a couple short cables.

Or buy an interface with enough inputs that everything is always plugged in.

Which is the best option? Depends on what gear you want to have ready to go and how much money you want to spend.

Ah. Cables and patch bays. I have lots of cables, no patch bays. Mostly bass, guitar, vocals, acoustic guitar. I use software for drums. Thanks!

  4. What are you micing, and what are you using DIs for? It sounds like a pretty small setup and 4 inputs would be enough to keep everything plugged in and ready to go. Certainly no need for a complicated patch bay for so few inputs. Are you singing while playing an instrument or doing vox separately?

Tell us more about what gear (interface, mics, DIs, amps, outboard gear, etc) you are using so we can make recommendations.

    Thanks for digging in!

I usually record one track at a time, and do not simultaneously record vocals while playing. I have a mic for acoustic guitar, a mic for vocals, and am using an M-Audio profire 610 interface into Cubase 9.5 on my PC. One mic stand and I usually swap out the vocal and guitar microphone depending on the what I'm doing.

I mostly use Cubase's VST's for preamps, effects, and cab models, though I will occasionally run out of a Fender Champ FX loop send into the interface. I use a Mesa Subway DI for bass.

That said, I mostly use the VST's not because I love the sound more than my amps and pedals, but because it's easier. If I had a better setup, I'd probably use more external stuff.

I also just got a used Two Notes CAB (original CAB, not the CAB M) IR loader and really like it so probably will run that into the interface for guitar and bass.

I often wind up with mic stands, cables, mic-preamp, etc. all over the floor after about 10 minutes of recording anything and it starts to feel confining in a weird way.

OK- I'll stop there or I will go on forever. Please ask more!

FWIW I'm also considering switching DAW's to something a little more 'plug n' play' than Cubase. While related, that's a different topic...

  7. Your M Audio 610 has 2 mic inputs and 2 line inputs. Your Mesa has a balanced line. out:. Get an XLR to TRS to connect it to one of the line inputs.

The Two Notes CAB has unbalanced line level out, use a 1/4" to connect it to the other line in. I assume you'll be going from you Champ power amp into the CAB.

EDIT: Looks like CAB has a balanced TRS out, so TRS to TRS to the second line in

So now you have 2 mic inputs. Find a place to leave your vocal mic set up. Buy a second mic stand for acoustic.

So now leave everything connected all the time. Take time to make sure everything is convenient, and cables are all run against the walls.

Vox will always be on input 1, acoustic on input 2, bass DI on input 3 and guitar amp on input 4. With no cables to run, you can be tracking within a couple minutes, and minimal tear down time, too.

Seriously. This is insanely helpful. I knew the art of Konmari was alive and well here at TB!

  9. I was thinking of a different Two Notes product. The C.A.B. won't accept a speaker level. Only instrument or line. But you probably knew that already.

also consider putting your mics in retractable boom stands like you’d see in a broadcast studio. That alone has made my life simpler and my space less cluttered.

That is such a good idea. Didn’t ever consider that. Anything specific you use that you’d recommend?

yes - give me a bit and I’ll check the brand that I have. Some even have the XLR cable built in.

I hang cables from cheap unfinished wall mounted coat racks in the stairwell that heads up to my studio.

I use a cheap tv as a monitor for a large visual workspace for Cubase. You have a lot of unused vertical space — would want the keyboards off to my right and some of the storage more to my left in that space. I’d also put the rack stuff off to the side instead of directly in front of the center of my mixing space.
