Mark has been brought up quite a few times here so I'm sure players here know who he is, my question is, when i saw Slave a couple times he would bring out this metallic blue jazz bass with three pickups. It also had a mirrored pickguard that covered the intire front of the instument. Well, I know this is a crap shoot but, does anyone know who built this bass? has anyone on here seen it? If not what song has your favorite Slave bassline?
I dont think anyone built it. I always though it was a homemade modification like what Bootsy did to make his first space bass. When did you see em btw? They still tour or what?
The bass that you describe was made by a co.called starrs(or stars)it had a very distinctive tone,I have yet to hear a Bass with that tone to this day. Slave still tours to this day but the only original member left is Guitarist Drac.they use pickup bass players from city to city, but in the last few months there has been talk of some of the other original members returning to the line up including Mark Adams.
OMG, Jauqo you nailed it on the money. THAT particular bass had a tone out of this world!!! His Alembic couldnt even hang with it. I'm surprised I'm not the only one who knew about it. AFAIK they are still touring, didnt know mark was'nt with 'em. He just recently did a small article in Bass Player magazine on how to groove. I last saw them in '85 with Narada Michael Walden and the Brothers Johnson. When mark did his solo it sounded like bombs exploding in harmonic patterns.

Hearing a lot about this dude..could you guys recommend some recordings I could check out? cheers Murf
Mark should really sign up and chat with us here! I'll never forget the first time I heard him play! I was truly moved! Some of his trademark licks I use to this very day. His neck slides, his use of double stop plucks, his use of of pedal effects (chorus/flange) and his hard fingerstyle of play. I've had arguments with cats who swear Mark slapped 'Just A Touch Of Love' and I kept telling him that Mark just had an aggresive fingerstyle! He also had a unique syncopated slap style. Hard to copy unless you were pretty good! It'd be nice to see the band get back together doing the old hits!
The 'Just A Touch Of Love' album is classic but there is a compilation cd out that has all the hits on it. I don't think the individual albums/cd's are available. You need this cd! Go buy it now!! Mark is the cat with the big 'fro' second from the left, top row. 'Drac' is the cat next to him! Classic band!
you nailed it dwbass, those lines were not slapped for the most part and the ones that were super syncopated.Im going to have to pick up that cd to replace the tapes i had to learn from, their 8-9 years old!
Yeah, I just re-ordered Stone Jam, that album to me has Marks most incredible playing. The most versitile however, is The Worlds On Hard which unfortunately is currently out of print. If you look around you can find it on vinyl. Stellar Fungk is the most band oriented and has GREAT production. Whats more incredible is that half of these guys were fresh out of high school, includng Mark. Mark "Mr. Mark" Adams(bass) and Mark "Drac" Hicks(guitars) were in fact the youngest and Steve "Fearless Leader" Washington(who plays bass as well as Mark and was the bassist for the groups Aurra, Civil Attack, and George Clinton) was a nephew of the Ohio Player's Peewee Middlebrooks. Drac had a group called Drac Pack kind of like Living Colour befor it's time, he was also a member of Steve's Civil Attack.
