I have one (of the older series). I don't know about the Northamerican pricing, but here in Europe they are 1/2 the price of Eden, Aguilar, Glockenklang or EBS but offer 90% (???) of the tone. Whether the 10% "bonus" of Eden etc. is worth the extra 50% money is subjective.

In short, I like my Markbass, it is small, light and offers a strong clean tone. It plays just under the "uber league" at a very good price/tone ratio.

Yes, Markbass is just the hupe here in Europe for the moment. Due to a very agressive price ppolicy and apparently some good products, Markbass is becoming very popular her. And yes, a 2,9 kg head just makes me dream !
