What sad news! I'm glad he did not die young, but I am old enough that 75 does not seem ancient to me. Marshall and BB Dickerson from War were my very first influences. I will never forget hearing "Skintight" over the radio for the first time. The bass just grabbed me! It was one of the very first lines I ever learned!

...just last week, out of the blue, someone at work streamed "Skin Tight" (after a Leonard Cohen song. Imagine that).
Of course, I hadda chime in & attempt to describe how the bass & drums were playing off each other + how cool the horn section part was...

RIP. Great band. Learned a lot from those guys.

Was he the guy on "Fire"? If so, damn, funk personified!

Ohio Players also seemed to spread the writing credits around because Marshall received credit on those hits, and he deserved it because those basslines are a huge part of those songs!

    RIP. Classic funk basslines.

And that pic! In the 70s, that was exactly what I was using: a P into an Acoustic 371...

That's The Way Of The World (the '70s movie w/ EW&F's soundtrack goin' on) is streaming free for Amazon Prime members.
I gave a capsule review on a different thread (terrible lighting, editing, acting...etc). But-
Check it out. It may answer your question.

    Yep...that's him.
"Skin Tight" is/was/always will be my favourite.
Video on this one is not too good. I picked this one 'cause it's not the P-bass (a Gibson?!?).
Also, they sometimes come across as the Sun Ra Arkestra of Funk.
