Martin Ain from Celtic Frost

  1. So I love Celtic Frost, and recognized his solid songwriting, but I just thought of him as a root-doubling, pick-playing thrash bassist, and not much more.

Well, the other day, I was listening to CF's "Mesmerized" from their classic Into the Pandemonium, and was blown away. He busts out this beautiful fill in the slow parts that REALLY clashes well with the guitars and vocal melody. And then on "The Usurper," from To Mega Therion, he does a nifty ascending fill JUST before each verse riff.

He also played a custom lefty Gibson Flying V Bass.
Anybody have any other cool tidbits to share?

Cool band, he had a couple moments to shine... not too much though. I do like how CF albums were produced though. They are heavy, but they have a warm organic feel to them... that's why I like old school doom/black metal more than this new breed of abrasive harsh stuff.

  3. Yeah, definitely. And Tom Warrior's guitar tone is so perfect for CF- groany sorta, complements his vocals well.
