What are some routines to do before and after playing to prevent injury?
I always give my hands a gentle stretch. Especially my fingers. Then, I have an exercise I do with both hands that involves holding your hand out straight and bending one finger down at a time. I actually got that out of Modern Drummer magazine, and it's great for independence between your fingers. I always bend my hands and arms every which way (yoga type things) just to be loosened up. After playing, I'm already loosened up, so I don't do anything other than let the adrenaline come down. That usually involves sitting down. I've never injured myself playing bass.
