I am maybe going to purchase one of these Basses but info is hard to come by and I can't look at it I only have the sellers description but I can return it and only suffer shipping which is pretty reasonable...…..any info out there?????????? Purchase price is under 1K.

Pete Lampe is Portland, Oregon is a trustworthy source for doublebasses. Shipping is costly and much more involved than returning a gift shirt.

I am aware of Pete's shop and also aware of the shipping associated with a Double Bass however it is being shipped by a company and I am not going to be liable for anything. I am mainly concerned with any construction problems associated with this bass and if it would be a good starter for Double Bass, I would like to expand my Bass playing to include a stand up.

How so?? Did I say something wrong or are these basses a POS and I shouldn't bother? I play the electric Bass and know little of the Acoustic.

Steve Swan knows what he’s talking about when it comes to uprights. Take his worthy advice and check out Bass Shop in Portland | Pete's Upright Bass Shop | 503-777-7027

Uprights are a very different animal than electrics. I feel new upright players should partner with a pro teacher for their instrument. Or at least go to a upright specialty luthier and talk.

There are too many bad inexpensive basses available.

I went ahead and ordered it, I am only liable for a mere pittance of shipping if I don't like it and I have a goodly amount of time to inspect it. I am going to take it to a local Luthier (Doug Heydon) who is well known locally for double bass and have him inspect it. It is either good or bad it's worth it to me to find out.

Hey Steve, thanks for taking the time to talk yesterday. I've set up a lesson and if things go well I'll be paying you a visit.

Here are the pics. I have a goodly amount of time to decide if I wish to keep it or not. There are only a couple of small dings on it and no cracks.

  10. So you just bought a basically new Romanian hybrid for less than a grand? Not a bad buy. How heavy is it? Should be about 20-22 pounds. If it’s heavier, which it probably is because Romanian, it won’t put out a ton of sound without a fight.

Well, on my bathroom scale (who know how accurate it is) 22lbs. So how hard do I need to hit it to get it to sound O.K.?

O.K. I had a long talk with my Luthier today. He said the Bass was probably worth what I paid for it and then we talked about the shortcomings...….ie, Heavy, Hard to get big sound out of it, Needs bridge work and a new end pin also strings. Will I like it long term, NO. I returned it today and even had the shipping charges reversed, NICE! He has an older German Bass that has been played locally in a symphony by the original owner for 40 years that I am considering.
