Matt Brewer has, properly, received a good deal of love for his bass playing here on TB. He's one of those players who, every time I hear him, gets me excited to go home and practice. He sounds so good and plays so beautifully that I always feel inspired to try to lift my own playing up another level. Matt has worked as a sideman with people like Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Greg Osby, Vijay Iyer, Dave Binney, Ambrose Akinmusire, etc. Well, now he has released his first album as a leader and it's pretty great! It's mostly his original compositions except for Ornette Coleman's "Free" (which features an absolutely ridiculous bass solo). The musicians he has on the album are not too shabby, either: Mark Turner, Steve Lehman, Lage Lund, David Virelles, and Marcus Gilmore. I highly recommend checking it out. http://www.crisscrossjazz.com/album/1373.html
He is an incredible bass player and jazz musician (two things that are often separate!). I saw him in a stellar Lee Konitiz trio with Joe LaBarbera on drums. I will track this down.
