Measuring action

Discussion in 'Hardware, Setup & Repair [BG]' started by highwattage, Mar 3, 2008.

  1. I realize this has probably been discussed before, and I'm embarressed I don't know this: when you measure the action at the 12th do you measure from the highest point on the fret, or on the surface of the fretboard?
  2. top of the fret
  3. action measurement is a convention...conventions are not right or wrong, they are simply there so that we all have a consistant baseline...

for action measurement, the convention is to measure from the top of the 12th fret to the bottom of the string...generally the outermost strings are measured only, just to give others the idea...hence, on a 4-string action is measured on the E and G strings...
  4. thanks alot guys, I guess my action isn't as bad as i initially thought
