Mesa Subway 115 with 210 or other 115

I started out with a 210/115. Gigged with it for about a year and then seen a 215 pop up used at GC for way less than it should have been so snagged it. Gigged with it for about 8 months and honestly it bothered me the whole time. I was missing something. I'm sure I could have went down the tone shaping rabbit hole but I was using my same settings that I had used with my previous stack. Didn't mesh well with me and about 3 months ago or so I purchased another 210 as I had sold my original and went back to the 210 115 stack. For my taste, 215 was too much 15" for me. I've often debated getting another 210 just to run a vertical 4 10 stack but it's totally not necessary. Having the voicing from 210 and 115 mixed together just hit both tastes for me at once and it's probably what I'll stick with for years to come.

Thank you for this.... that's exactly what I was thinking - so many incredible reviews on that 215 though. maybe if I ran that and a 410 side by side but that is just waaaay too much cab. back in the day I had the road ready cabs with my 400+ had the EV loaded 410 and 118. That think was MASSIVE tone. but I almost never pulled out that 18.

Just in a size footprint, I think the 115/210 is probably the route for me. Not to mention cost.... Since you're a mesa engineer, how would you compare these new cabs to the 25 year old model (OMG I'M OLD) ? I absolutely loved my ev loaded road ready, other than the significant, crazy weight.

There are similarities, but when developing the Subway cabinet line about 10 years ago, we asked players here on TB what they wanted to see given the way music and needs have evolved over time.

What came up constantly was lower weight, smaller, higher sensitivity, higher power handling, more low frequency extension and a more sophisticated tonal palate.

The signature tone is there, but it's now a more broadly appealing tonal package outside of the very hard rock & metal genres. This doesn't mean that they can't do these genres adequately (there are touring acts using them in these genres) but now they are much more player friendly outside of those genres.

Another thing to add. Carrying the 215 up and down stairs was a royal pain in the a$$. I'd much rather carry two separate 35lbs cabs separately than one 60lbs cab. I would hit my knees on it which stopped me from lifting my left walking up steps. Food for thought.

Yeah, that's one of the main issues I have with the PH1000. no issues as long as I can roll it, but once we get to stairs .... hOOOboy.

Thread resurrection.

I just read through this thread. What I found interesting when reading the comments on comparing the SW115 cab to the SW210 cab, some commenters feel that the 210 has more of a scooped sound and the 115 has more mids, and yet @agedhorse says that the 210 has more "edge" and the 115 is smoother and flatter (softer? rounder?) in the mids. Andy is, of course, the design engineer, so he would know the specs. Perhaps the differing opinions from commenters is due to different people hearing things differently? 🤷‍♂️

Yes, hearing things differently and describing differently. The mid character of the two cabinets is different in both amplitude and in frequency/bandwidth. There is also a somewhat difference in texture that's an inherent part of the mechanical reproduction mechanism.

With all that in mind.. would you choose another 115 or a 210 to go with the 115?

I know so many people seem to recommend 2x 115s but part of me that is used to 410s until now thinks that maybe the 115/210 combo is the way to go.. And also it would bring more versatility I think, but so many people recommend 2x 115s.. it is hard to decide :p

I would love to hear from people that had the same dilemma and had to choose one or the other.

PS: I didn't talk about the 112 because I don't know why it is the one I am the least interested in, but I may be wrong!

I have EXACTLY the same dilemma as you, only I'm choosing the 800D head to go with....
