Ok, this is a bit of a weird one. I just got one of these and am falling so hard for it I immediately immersed myself it tube-mania and wanted feedback from all the Mesa owners I could find. Well, I PM'd several TB'ers here, and as usual, all were more than happy to respond with great stuff rather than be annoyed by an unsolicited PM.

    Anyway, here's what I asked:

After getting some of the responses, I realized I should have just started the thread and PM'd these folks to post instead, which I will now do. In the mean time, what follows are the responses I've gotten so far...

Ok, so this won't be a megathread. Figured (hoped) there'd be more posters, but in the mean time, I should have my Telefunkens today or Monday, and I plan on ordering some good Electro-Harmonix, JJ's, and proabably a few others. I'll check'em out in this head and post later.

    Peace.

Oh give us some time! I think this will "fill up" fairly quickly! :D

Let me toss this one out for fun. Let's here from particular cab combinations with the Walkabout that really seem synergistic. For instance, I really, really like the Epifani T-110UL/T-112 with my Walkabout at low/mid volumes. At these levels, it's just great. But, if I am doing a really loud stage sound gig (that means, the guitarists I am competing with a bit out of control!), the T-112 loses some tightness down low. But at less than stupid loud siutations, this is a good mix. Two combinations that seem to just rawk at any volume level with the Walkabout are the Accugroove Tri 210L (in 4 ohm position) and two EA Wizzy's (which make for a 2 ohm load - but I have had no problems with this). For whatever reason, both of these cab configurations sound better with my Walkabout than with pretty much any other amp/head I own.

Any similar observations from you Walkabout users?

    Tom.

I think I read in one of the posts I rec'd that the Aggie GS112's are a particularly good match with this head as well, but I haven't tried mine yet. I hope to tonight, tho.

  19. Hello Vic. I had a Walkabout Scout 12 for a while and ended up reluctantly selling it. It was an amazing combo, and interestingly, the primary reason that I sold it is probably why so many people love it... it REALLY sounds like a 100% tube amp to my ears. I don't know if it's that extra tube driving the mosfets (which Mesa calls simul-state power, I think), but it really has that 'give' that, in my experience, typically only an amp with a tube pre and power section would give you. Amazing volume and bottom coming out of it. Other hybrid heads like Eden and SWR sound much more transistor-like to me, with the preamp tube providing a little 'warmth' possibly. But man, this thing growled and had that super fat bottom just like the big all-tube amps.

My only design comment is that I wish they would find a way to quiet the fan a little bit.... on the very soft jazz-type gigs on which I planned to use the amp, that fan was just loud enough to bother me a little bit. Not a big deal though.... very nice quality, sound and design.

I'm checking now, but I thought someone said they did have an improvement for this.
