Does anyone know if is if possible to use the XLR out in Mesa WD 800 without connecting to a bass cab?

Yes, solid state amplifiers don't need a cab hooked up.

It is possible. Yes. Most amps made today can be used as preamps in studio or on stage without hooking up speaker cabs. The exception being some all tube heads. You should be perfectly fine.

Also, Mesa's owner's manuals are some of the most comprehensive ever written for a piece of amplification gear. Yours should have all the info you need to run your head safely, and is a very good educational read, regardless.

Your Mesa WD (and all the Mesa Subway series bass amps) can be safely operated with no speaker load attached. This is from the Headphone section of the WD manual, but applies to using the DI as well:

"It is not necessary to have a speaker connected to the amp when using headphones, it is completely safe to operate the amp without a speaker load."

yes. A number of TB members (me included) use their D800/D800+/WD800's as preamp/DI's for recording ... all without a speaker load attached. Sounds great!
